David Gordon Hughes
David Gordon Hughes was born in Belfast in 1957. He still lives and paintings there. Although receiving no formal artistic training, in his youth he was greatly influenced by the early 20th-century Irish and European masters: Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, J.B. Yeats, Paul Henry and the enigmatic Markey Robinson (1918 - 1999) all left their mark on David's emerging talent.
Describing himself as an "Irish Colourist", David paints with a style which is both distinctive and indeed unique. This technique involves the preparation of an underlay of GOLD LEAF spread over his entire canvas, before adding vibrant blues, reds and yellows. These bold colours are then thrown into sharper relief by the application of moody shades of verdegris, jasmine and ochre. The stunning effect is further enhanced by then granting the viewer tantalising glimpses of the luxurious ground of gold underneath.
For several years David had been a regular exhibitor at the Royal Ulster Academy. However, it is the acceptance of his work by the prestigious Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin each year since 1994 that has afforded David his most notable accolade. In addition to these academic achievements, David has recently attained outstanding exhibition success at the W.H. Patterson Gallery in London and at Jorgensen Fine Art Gallery in Dublin.
David Gordon Hughes' work is to be found in many corporate and public collections, including Ulster Television, And the Ulster Museum, and in numerous private collections throughout Ireland, Great Britain, Europe and North America.
