George H Smyth
George H. Smyth was born in Ardglass in Co. Down in 1968. Despite being born in the midst of the 'Troubles' he had an idyllic childhood, enjoying long summer holidays on the beach at his beloved Tyrella. He studied art at the University of Ulster, graduating in 1994. He then took a year off to travel the world, broadening his education in every sense.

Then spurred on and encouraged by his friend and hero Peter Howson, a Scottish artist, he set himself to the serious business of painting, an encompassing passion.

His first commission, while still at college was to design album covers for the rock band Therapy. Within three years of returning to Ulster he had his first one man exhibition in the Dalriada Gallery, this enjoyed many highly favourable reviews. The show being both a critical and financial success. His talent continues to excite both critical acclaim and commercial success; his paintings have become desirable commodities on the international stage.

Influences on his work, include his Father, himself a talented watercolorist, European surrealists, Salvador Dali amongst them, and Scottish realists of the 80's like Conroy and Campbell.

Despite having travelled extensively his home space of Ardglass remains high on the list of places of significant influence.

His paintings provoke both an emotional, and an intellectual response, they intrigue and challenge, inviting the viewer to proffer their own interpretation of the artists intent.
